MALAYSIA VS ASEAN · TRADE BALANCE · 2023
Which ASEAN economies exported more goods than they imported?
ASEANstats 2023 merchandise exports and imports. The chart uses export coverage so surplus and deficit economies can share one positive scale, while the notes retain the US-dollar balances.
Method & notes
Malaysia's merchandise exports exceeded imports by US$47.1 billion in 2023; only Singapore recorded a larger surplus in this 10-economy source table.
METHOD & LIMITATIONSHow the numbers were calculated
PulseKita uses the fixed 2023 trade-in-goods table in ASEAN Member States: Selected Key Indicators 2023. Export coverage is exports divided by imports × 100: above 100 indicates a merchandise surplus and below 100 a deficit. The underlying US-dollar export, import and balance values remain attached in the dataset and notes. Timor-Leste is not inserted from another release because this fixed source table covers the ten ASEAN member states reported in that publication.
- Malaysia exported US$312.6 billion and imported US$265.5 billion of merchandise in 2023, a surplus of US$47.1 billion.
- Malaysia's merchandise balance was the second-largest surplus in the 10-economy source table, at #2/10 when balances are ordered from highest surplus to deepest deficit.
- The chart's 117.7% coverage ratio means Malaysia exported about US$117.7 for every US$100 of merchandise imports.
- The coverage ratio is a visualization of balance direction and intensity, not a replacement for the underlying US-dollar trade balance.
- This is merchandise trade from ASEANstats and should not be mixed with balance-of-payments goods or goods-and-services series from a different statistical framework.
