Both registered marriages and divorces declined in 2023, with Muslim registrations making up roughly three-quarters of each national total.
METHOD & LIMITATIONSHow the numbers were calculated
PulseKita reproduces the national totals in DOSM's Marriage and Divorce, 2024 release. Malaysia uses parallel administrative systems: non-Muslim marriages and divorces are registered through JPN, while Muslim marriage and divorce records come through the Syariah administration. The story compares annual registered events, not unique households.
- Registered marriages fell 12.5 per cent from 2022 to 2023.
- Registered divorces fell 8.7 per cent over the same period.
- Muslim marriages accounted for 74.5 per cent of total marriages in 2023; Muslim divorces accounted for 76.6 per cent of divorces.
