Method & notes
Malaysia is #2/7 in the verified 2021 ASEAN subset by resident patent applications per million people.
METHOD & LIMITATIONSHow the numbers were calculated
PulseKita requests World Bank indicators IP.PAT.RESD and SP.POP.TOTL for 2021, joins countries that have both values, and divides resident patent applications by population to produce applications per million people. Non-resident applications, patent grants and older years are not substituted.
- Malaysia records about 25.8 resident patent applications per million people in 2021 and ranks #2/7 among ASEAN members with both patent and population observations.
- Not shown for 2021: Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Timor-Leste.
- Malaysia recorded 883 resident patent applications in the underlying 2021 World Bank/WIPO series before population normalisation.
- Patent applications are an invention-output signal, not a direct measure of patent quality, commercial value, granted patents or startup activity.
