Method & notes
IN BRIEF

The state ranking is about cumulative CPI movement relative to each state's 2010 base, not a ranking of which state has the highest absolute living cost.

METHOD & LIMITATIONS

Relative CPI movement, not an absolute cost-of-living ranking.

PulseKita filters DOSM's monthly state CPI to the overall basket, takes the latest available month in each calendar year, and subtracts the 2010 base value of 100. This measures accumulated index movement relative to the base, not the absolute cost of living between states.

  • A higher CPI index does not mean a state is absolutely more expensive than another state; it means its representative basket has moved further relative to its own 2010 base.
  • CPI represents an average household basket, so an individual's experienced inflation can differ.
  • The latest year may contain fewer than twelve months.
