The state comparison is useful, but changes around 2017 need to be read with the source definition attached.
METHOD & LIMITATIONSHow the numbers were calculated
PulseKita reads the official forest_reserve_state dataset and excludes the aggregate Peninsular Malaysia row before ranking states.
- Permanent Reserved Forests are gazetted government lands managed under the National Forestry Act and National Forestry Policy framework.
- For Peninsular Malaysia, data before 2017 can include proposed reserves that were not yet gazetted; 2017 onward is based on gazetted reserves only.
- The series therefore has a methodology break around 2017 and should not be interpreted as pure physical deforestation without checking gazettement changes.
- Missing historical data for some states/years is left missing rather than imputed.
