Method & notes
IN BRIEF

Using births per 1,000 residents makes the state comparison more meaningful than simply ranking the largest populations by baby count.

METHOD & LIMITATIONS

Crude birth rate based on the mother's usual state of residence.

PulseKita uses DOSM's published crude birth rate by state. The state is based on the mother's usual residence, not the hospital or physical place where the baby was delivered.

  • A live birth is counted when signs of life are present upon delivery.
  • The dataset is based on births registered with the National Registration Department (JPN).
  • Crude birth rate is useful for comparing states of different population sizes, but it is not the same measure as total fertility rate.
