A new phone generation does not always sell more

Counterpoint's public comparisons show varied results across models. Six of nine tracked devices exceeded their predecessor's sell-through in equivalent first-six-month launch windows, while three fell behind. This is not a representative ranking of Malaysia's entire smartphone market.

+274.4%iPhone 17 Pro MaxGrowth versus iPhone 16 Pro Max across each model's first six months.
−52.6%Samsung Galaxy A36Decline versus Galaxy A35 over a comparable post-launch period.

Why did some models rise while others fell?

These figures alone cannot establish the causes. Pricing, promotions, supply, distribution and buyer preferences might affect sales, but each explanation requires independent supporting evidence.

Comparison: each generation's first six months after launch. Public data through May 2026; figures are subject to Counterpoint revisions.

Three distinct measures

Consumer sell-through (Counterpoint), device shipments (Omdia) and measured mobile web traffic (StatCounter) are different metrics. Model-level unit sales and market shares require additional licensed data.
