Method & notes
The indicator-by-indicator view is more informative than collapsing all river pollution into one score.
METHOD & LIMITATIONSHow the numbers were calculated
PulseKita reads DOE's official river-basin monitoring dataset and selects rows classified as polluted for each of the three published indicators: BOD5, NH3-N and suspended solids.
- The three indicators describe different forms of water-quality stress and should not be added together.
- The denominator is the number of monitored basins in each year, which can change over time.
- A basin can be classified differently across the three indicators.
- DOE monitors river quality through a large national network of manual and automated stations.
