Method & notes
Median household income is usually a better picture of the typical household than the mean, but long-run nominal values should not be read as changes in purchasing power.
METHOD & LIMITATIONSSurvey years, nominal ringgit, median household income.
PulseKita uses DOSM's published median gross monthly household income by state for each HIES survey year. We start at 1976 because this was the first survey year covering Sabah and Sarawak as well as Peninsular Malaysia.
- These are nominal ringgit values and are not adjusted for inflation.
- HIES is survey-based and is not conducted every calendar year, so the animation moves between published survey years.
- From 1989 onward, the official household-income statistics are based on Malaysian citizen households.
- Federal Territory boundaries and state coverage change over the long historical series.
