2023MONEY

MAG reports a second consecutive positive operating profit.

The group records RM889 million in operating profit, 64% higher year on year, after years of restructuring and pandemic disruption.

WHY HAS THE AIRLINE BEEN RESTRUCTURED SO MANY TIMES?

Flag-carrier economics combine national expectations with one of the world's most volatile businesses.

Its roots predate Malaysia itself.

The airline lineage passes through Malayan Airways, Malaysian Airways and Malaysia-Singapore Airlines before the 1972 creation of MAS.

2014 was an extraordinary dual shock.

MH370 and MH17 created immense human tragedy while accelerating an already urgent need to restructure the airline.

The modern group is broader than one airline.

MAG combines the flag carrier with other airline, aviation-service and travel businesses in an attempt to build a more resilient operating model.

WHY THIS HISTORY MATTERS

Malaysia Airlines is simultaneously a transport company, national symbol and recurring public-policy question.

Its long history helps explain why debates about routes, profitability, ownership and national service are often more complex than normal airline economics.
